About our Events

bobo gallery asheville ncAsheville Green Drinks is proud to be one of the most prolific event series in Western Noth Carolina. As part of the self-organizing international grassroots networking event series called Green Drinks, we connect our local community to the science of sustainability through regular talks, panels, special events and discussion groups. All over the world people who are interested in the science of sustainability are meeting-up for drinks to discuss ecological wisdom and sustainable economies. The Green Drinks phenomena is featured in over 639 cities worldwide!

Originally created in London, England the Green Drinks movement was launched in Asheville in 2004 by Joseph Malki from (Seven-Star), Ty Hallock from Top Floor Studio, and Brad & Elizabeth Reichart from Bobo Gallery.

Asheville Green Drink’s hallmark has been that instead of hosting an event once a month like most cities, it hosts an event every week, typically with a speaker (excepting holidays and snow weather). Asheville Green Drinks formation was largely inspired by the work of Ulla Reeves and her management of EnviroBeer Night which was regular monthly gathering for eco activists around town to connect, socialize, and relax. Asheville Green Drinks is lucky to be supported by a wide variety of community members with a range of ideological backgrounds who share a common commitment to ecological stewardship.

Since 2004 Asheville has hosted the hardest working environmental networking cocktail hour in the world.

From 2004 to 2010, Joseph B. Malki, Sage Linden, Ty Hallock and Jim Barton alternated in the the facilitation and coordination of over 250 events. Some of these events included eco-consious dance parties co-produced by Asheville impresarios Graham Hackett,  dj Bowie and Static Age Records. These parties evolved into GreenBash a national concert series billed as the official after parties for the national consumer show Green Festivals.

In 2010, our main founder – Mr. Malki decided to embrace the community collaboration model and involve Asheville’s leading environmental non-profits in developing Asheville Green Drinks programming. He invited several local non-profits to form a steering committee to help advance the diversity of topics focused on ecological wisdom, sustainable economies and social justice. For several years Asheville Green Drinks (AGD) relied on Western North Carolina’s leading non-profits in developing educational and interactive programming. The steering committee is comprised of our “Partners in Education” who have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AGD. These include the Dogwood AllianceMountain TrueUnited Nations Association of WNC, Sierra Club of Western North Carolina (WENOCA), Western North Carolina Green Building Association, Transition Town Asheville, United Nations Association of WNC, Lenoir-Rhyne University – Center for Graduate Studies of Asheville and our co-founder Joseph B. Malki.

Currently our fiscal sponsor is the Vets2Vets, a nationally registered 509 (a)(2) charitable organization. Asheville Green Drinks advances causes in support of Vets2Vets tax-exempt mission of fostering sustainable solutions for veterans.

We thank Ty Hallock and Top Floor Studio for their initial development of the AGD website from 2005-2010. Additionally, in 2010 our founder Joseph B. Malki redesigned our website on the WordPress platform and integrated our social media on Facebook and Twitter. Our email newsletter was developed by master designers Evolv.com and its’ template creation and distribution is supported by our in-kindsponsor MyNewsletterBuilder.com.

Asheville Green Drinks is a great way of catching up with the latest issue in sustainable and social advocacy issues, connecting with people you know and meeting new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd making Green Drinks an organic, self-organizing network. Our events are primarily social and educational. Many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, “done deals” and had moments of profound serendipity. We look forward to seeing you soon!
